Praia de Compostela municipal pools open competition, 2020
with @vaniacollazo
The swimming pools are conceived as a robust platform rising 1.2m above the beach’s topography, preserving visual connections between the seafront walkway and the sea. Its geometry establishes a sensitive relationship with the surrounding beach and promenade, qualifying the spaces around it with various seafront activities. The materials used aim not only to accommodate the proposed programme but also to improve the resilience of the actual beach, which has been deteriorated due to decades of intensive shellfishing activity.
Service elements associated with the pools employ materials drawn from the maritime culture of the Arousa estuary, such as timber posts, fishing nets, and other traditional coastal elements. Together, these features create a cohesive intervention that strengthens the identity of Compostela Beach while recovering and reorganising an underused coastal area into a vibrant public space connected to the sea.
