The 2020 international design competition for the Follo Museum workshop building in Drøbak, Norway, sought proposals for a new 800m²–1,300m² facility for traditional craft education and conservation.
The proposal for the new woodworking workshops at Follo Museum is conceived as a contemporary and site-sensitive structure embedded within the museum’s natural landscape. Positioned at the edge of the plateau, the building establishes a calm dialogue with the existing administration building while introducing a clear architectural identity rooted in craftsmanship, openness, and permanence.
The project is defined by a simple and robust volumetric composition that combines generous workshop spaces with a welcoming public atmosphere beneath a unified pitched roof. The building is conceived as both a place of production and a visible expression of craft, where making becomes part of the visitor experience. Large openings frame views across the museum grounds and surrounding forest, reinforcing the relationship between interior activity and the landscape beyond.
Carefully adapted to the site’s topography, the structure touches the ground lightly through a minimal foundation system that preserves the existing terrain and vegetation. The architecture seeks a restrained material presence, allowing the building to integrate naturally within the wooded environment while creating a new landmark for the museum.
